Over here at Bear Mountain…
You'll find a colourful and entertaining and informative mix of missives written by me, James Rose.
The premise of Bear Mountain is simple: I supply you with articles on subjects ranging from travel, finance, business, sport, food, books, movies, music, lifestyle, health, politics, tech, humour/satire, dogs and more. Stories you won’t find anywhere else.
Think of Bear Mountain as my roving column on what’s going on in this big ol’ world as I/we move through it.
First rule at Bear Mountain: Don’t be boring. And I aim to inform. Truth and transparency are near and dear.
There is currently no fixed publishing schedule for Bear Mountain. Each week you can expect multiple first-rate missives.
Back in the 60s, Dylan sang about an infamous picnic massacre at a different Bear Mountain:
“Now, it don’t seem to me quite so funny
What some people are gonna do for money
There’s a brand new gimmick every day
Just to take somebody’s money away”
But unlike Bobby Dylan’s Bear Mountain, this one here ain’t no gimmick.
I’m here to deliver. Most of what I’ll publish will be free. But I am offering a paid option for those willing to financially support my efforts. Paying members get unlimited access to all future missives and full access to the archive. The deal is $5 CAD/month or $50 annually.
Much obliged if you feel so inclined. Truly.
So as a writer, I’ll classify myself as a feature oriented generalist with a wide range of interests and experience. For close to ten years now, I’ve written journalism, novels and unproduced screenplays. I try my best to look at the world through a multi-disciplinary lens.
In my journalism, I’ve written for the Financial Post, Aspen Daily News, Calgary Herald, Forecast Ski Magazine, Columbia Valley Pioneer, and BOEReport.com among others. In 2018, I had fun completing a residency in Environmental Reportage at the Banff Centre for Literary Arts. You can find more of my archived material at jamesrosewrites.com.
My third, most recent book, Run For Roses, is a prequel to my debut novel Chung Piece. Run For Roses is a road trip novel featuring two intertwined yet disparate road trips. Rollicking, raucous, Run For Roses asks the question: What matters? Journey or destination? And my fourth novel is in the works…
I grew up in British Columbia’s Columbia Valley and hold a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Calgary. During and since my uni days, I’ve done my fair share of travelling. Canada, Asia, Australia, Caribbean, bit of Europe, LOTS of the United States. And there are so many more places I want to go. Doing, seeing, exploring, experiencing, bumping into and getting to know the many colourful characters out there in the wilds. That’s what I’m about.
And when I’m not elsewhere, My dog and I call Banff, Alberta home.
In the spirit of presenting Bear Mountain readers with something more akin to a membership than a subscription, I will continue to expand the publication’s scope. Bear Mountain won’t be the only thing you read, but I do hope it will become one of your favourites.
So join me as I take a closer look at this big, beautiful world. And if you like what you’re reading, please don’t hesitate to share.
Over here at Bear Mountain, we ride at dawn and it’s…
Time to saddle up, haul ass.

Yours,
James
